The National Turkey Federation (NTF) along with state, regional and federal leaders has been working since last winter with top senators to provide solutions to ensure adequate cold-weather propane supplies. Today, U.S. Senator Al Franken (D-MN) introduced “Propane Supply for Heating Act of 2014,” cosponsored by Senate Energy Committee’s top leadership, including Sens. The National Turkey Federation praised USDA for moving forward with its Modernization of Poultry Slaughter Inspection rule.  USDA released the final version of the rule today, which will allow poultry plants nationwide the option to implement an enhanced inspection program that focuses even greater attention on the prevention of microbiological hazards.  This enhanced program was previously was limited to 25 pilot plants, but now that the rule has been finalized, NTF said it expects many turkey plants to adopt the new system.

The turkey industry is committed to working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to implement logical steps in modernizing the U.S. food-safety inspection system to ensure it remains the world’s best.

Poultry & Egg Association, National Chicken Council and National Turkey Federation submitted comments to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) proposed rule mandating the use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). The National Turkey Federation (NTF) urged the Food and Drug Administration to recognize proven, existing safeguards inherent where there is common ownership of turkeys and the feed mills supplying them and to exempt those mills from a new FDA regulation. 

In comments submitted Monday to FDA’s proposed rule on preventive controls in animal feed, NTF said a mill’s exclusive supply arrangement to feed the turkeys of common ownership provides an economic incentive greater than any regulation to produce the safest, highest quality feed.
